Research Into Band Shots

We decided to start researching and planning four our photography shoot. We plan to do our photography shoot in the media room with the green screen as it will help us when using the magic wand tool on Photoshop  We needed inspiration four our band shots such as an idea of what to wear, what positions to stand in, how to pose etc. Therefore we researched into our chosen bands band photography and band shots from other bands that follow the same indie pop genre. The ancillary tasks that I will be creating are an album release poster and a digi pack, therefore these shots are important as they will be include din my work and need to match the genre and style of my ancillary tasks.

Plain White T's

Analyzing band shots from other bands following the same indie pop genre:

Cage The Elephant

Two Door Cinema Club

Vampire Weekend

Temper Trap

Practise Solo Band Shots

Below are some practise solo band shots we took. The green screen wasn't available at  this time so we thought we would practise against white available backgrounds. We took images of both me and kieran seperatley. The use of the guitar represented the genre of the music and the fact that we are a band. The facial expressions I had to pull were sad and depressive as I am 'Delilah.'

Analysing A Music Video Following The Indie Pop Genre

Analysis of 'Love lost' music video by 'The Temper Trap'

  1. Opening shot starts with dialogue, showing an intimidating and bossy athletics coach giving them orders. The setting is on what looks like a cross country field.
  2. The mood of the song is glum and dull, therefore the lighting is moody and damp.
  3. The narrative shows children starting to run, it begins focused on one boy, camera moves back smoothly so it looks like he isn't getting very far, slow movement of camera just like the pace of running. The boy keeps moving lower under the camera but camera stays at the same level at all times, it moves left to right smoothly to show different band members.
  4. The beat of the guitar and snare drum moves in time with the running
  5. The children are the band members, therefore they are miming the words, this is a different style. Other band members (children ) are introduced singing and running.
  6. They are wearing all white running outfits, stand out from the green forest background, there clothes and faces are also muddy to show how long and hard they have been working.
  7. Sudden stop of running as music builds up, camera zooms out into a wide shot of all runners. as the music gets up beat, they do exercises in time with the music, very unconventional all in sync.
  8. As music goes back into verses, they start to run again, camera stays in the same position but they all peel out left to right so there is no one on camera.
  9. Camera then moves up to a low angle shot of the sky, pathetic fallacy- thunder and lighting reflecting their unhappiness and band moods, also a coincidence that there day is getting worse and worse.
  10. Abstract images of crow flying and chirping.
  11. As they do pressups the camera becomes level with them so you are in the action.
  12. Low shot of them running, to show that they are determined to prove their coach wrong, the camera is almost acting as the athletic coach. The camera moves away from them, jumping into the mud in time with the beat, there are also small explosions matching the beat as well.
  13. Music is interrupted by dialogue, which thenfinishes as the beat kicks in again. New characters are introduced, showing the girls running faster than the boys
  14. The girls are all clean in red, a particular colour that stands for love, reflecting the song theme.
  15. The genre of the song is not reflected or portrayed in the music video which is also unconventional
  16. The end shot is a landscape view of the setting (field.) Comedic ending as the boy is sick but carries on running.

Analysing A Music Video Following The Indie Pop Genre

Analysis of the music video 'Next Year' by 'Two Door Cinema Club'

  1. Opening shot is the view from the stage so you can see the audience as well. These opening shots flash very quickly to show fast pace movement of band members on stage.
  2. The lights from the stage and around the arena are shown throughout the video however in the opening shot they flash quickly each time the camera moved to a different band member.
  3. There are shots of fans walking excitedly to the arena and close ups of crowd members enjoying them selves.
  4. The zoom up on foot movement of band members leaving you in suspension of seeing their faces
  5. The fast pace movement immediately stops as lead singer begins to sing, the solo band footage tends to be zoomed up on the lead singers face showing his mouth, the mic, his nose and half his eye
  6. The camera effect gives of an ice cool effect, particularly the colours blue/black and white to match the mood and the colour of the lights.
  7. The narrative is of the band members getting ready to go on stage, building suspension. The shots would be alternate showing the singing then back to narrative, then back to singing and so forth to show the progression of the band members getting to the stage.
  8. The music then builds from the pressing of a foot on a pedal
  9. There are many zoomed shots on hands on guitar, piano and being within the drum set
  10. The use of real concert footage make it feel like you are there with them following the actiojn
  11. Many over the shoulder shots of band members so you can see crowd aswell.
  12. Many shots of catching the light so that it peirces and makes different shapes
  13. The use of slow motion within the crowd cheering helps to cearly see there emotion and response to the band and there music.
  14. There is always a focus light on the main leader so he stands out
  15. Deep focus shot of someones phone videoing so the band behind are blurred
  16. Each band member is wearing some form of shirt/polo creating a smart casual look
  17. The use of props in the crowd such as the balloons helo to show the audience having fun
  18. As the song gets slower their is a birdseye view from the left of the crowd who would be in seats, this shot show the crowd and stage in a wide shot.
  19. As the song slows down the bands hands become a slow motion silhouette
  20. The finishing shot is from the crowds view of  the band members clapping, then they become blurred and the hands of the crowd members turn into a silhouette which then merge together and blur out into a black out.

Analysing a music video following the indie pop genre

Analysis of the 'Jump Into The Fog' music video by 'The Wombats'

  1. Opening shot of piano being played however only showing the hands.
  2. Fuzzy effect on screen as if its an old tape
  3. Setting in a hotel lobby which is breaking the rules and therefore reflecting there rebellious stereotype
  4. Hue and saturated effect as it is gloomy with a yellow/brown colour tone
  5. Slow motion on the acting to differentiate band filming to narrative
  6. First part of singing is zoomed up on face but from a high shot and the camera moves with the movement of the guitarist
  7. The use of fog to represent the song lyrics
  8. There are many cross dissolves used to change from scene to scene
  9. Smart clothing worn (suits) even though it's the opposite to there stereotype so they don't have all buttons done up or shirts tucked in. Plus the lead singer is wearing glasses to differentiate him from the other band members.
  10. Gaze Theory is used as the narrative shows many attractive girls, especially the zoom shot of the ladies shoe and tights to tease the audience.
  11. Cool effect in the solo singing shot when hes just sitting in the room, monotone blank stares not much movement looking sarcastic and bored
  12. Red glow appears when things have turned bad as the solo band shots start to move into the corridor as the narrative does
  13. Low angle shots of band playing
  14. Camera jumps as it says jump into fog as it matches the lyrics and makes the audience jump in sync
  15. Quick movement from each band members playing as it matches the drum beats.
  16. The last shot is a swoop of fog covering the screen

Story Board- Bridge

Below are the story board plans for the bridge section of the song. We have chose to use a different effect within one of the section of the bridge by using fast motion. This is being used within the traffic, it will be taken at night so the lights on the cars are shining. This will be effective as it will be a birds eye view of the tragic from the top of a bridge. The use of fast motion shows how busy the world is yet he still feels alone without her.

Below is the music video for Ed Sheeran's 'A Team' at 1:45 there is an example of fast motion on the traffic and people walking around her on the street. This is what gave us inspiration to include fast motion into our music video:

Story Board-Verse 2

Below are the story board plans for verse 2, we have stated the type of shot, the song lyrics, explained the narrative and drawn images to explain each piece of footage. An example of footage in verse 2 is the use of looking out of the train window, with your reflection in the window. We want to use this as it is effective and shows her emotion well and it is a common shot when someone is thinking about someone or running away from the one you love. These are similar to the themes within our music video and the song itself.

Below are a few images relating to our shots that have given us inspiration for our music video:

Story Board- Verse 1

Below are the story board plans for verse 1 of 'Hey There Delilah.' We have linked each scene to each section of the lyrics to help move the narrative along smoothly. We will follow these story boards whilst filming. A particular setting we are using in verse 1 is a train station, we like the cliche idea of the boy and girl seeing each other across the platform but when the train goes past one of them is missing. This is common in romantic films so we felt it would be suitable for our music video.

Below is an advert from 'match.com' wherein we gained inspiration for our train station footage:

Story Board- Introduction

We decided that we wanted to incorporate some stop motion into our video, we thought it would be suitable to have it as the introduction to introduce the name of the song more effectively and adventurously. We chose to use scrabble pieces as they have letters on them all ready and through research of stop motion we came across many videos that incorporated the use of scrabble letters. Our stop motion will consist of scrabble pieces on a wooden table with a red pen in the corner following the red motif. Through stop motion the letters will build up to spell the words 'Plain White T's' and 'Hey There Delilah.' This section of footage should take up to 10 seconds of the music video. For this section we will most likely take up to 95 shots.

Below is an example of stop motion using scrabble letters, this is what influenced our video:

Applying Uses and Gratifications

The uses and gratifications theory is an audience centered approach which states that audiences are active viewers, choosing to view texts for different reasons as well as in many different formats. Blumler and Katz (1974) then expanded this idea and created their own version, which stated that individuals choose texts for the following reasons:

Escapism – Removing themselves from everyday issues and routines. Music videos are a form of escapism from the real world. In reference to narrative videos, the audience have a chance to observe a character’s life, they are able to escape into that character’s narrative. This is applied through the narrative within our music video where in we show the emotional journey between the two characters to the point where the audience see it as reality as they are so drawn in and become the character themselves. The audience may never have experienced love before so by watching this video they feel the emotion for the camera, escaping into new emotions and situations just through watching and listening to the song.

Personal Relationships – Building emotional links within the music video. Some people will watch the music video because they can relate to it, they like to know that they aren't alone in certain situations  Also some people will watch it so that they can feel even more depressed, they want it to create emotion and/or back up their current emotions. This will be applied within the narrative, footage of flashbacks, chemistry between the characters(hugging, kissing, smiling, holding hands,)locations etc. For the smallest things could create emotion for the audience member as they could remind them of a specific time in their life, e.g. footage of the park could remind the audience of a time that they were in a park with a partner, friend, family member etc. This could create emotion for them as it reflects their personal relationships.

Personal Identity- Stating particular identities by consuming texts, 'finding yourself' and learning behaviour from them. Individuals are able to gain a personal identity from watching particular music videos. This is because being associated with various genres of music, places people into categories in the public eye. For example, this who enjoy rock music may be classed as 'emos.' The style within our video follows two different social groups. Adding to this, our video is indie pop which incorporates the mainstream social groups. The age of the band members.actors in our music video are supposed to be perceived as 19-21s, this will lure in an audience 19 and above. Adding to this there are both male and female actors band members(gaze theory) which means both male and female audiences could relate to our music video. The theme of love and romance implies that the audience intended would be 15+ as this is the age that teenagers become emotionally involved in relationships , this once again would create a personal identity for the audience as they can put themselves in the actors shoes and feel their emotions.

'Plain White T's' Chosing Font/Chosen Font

As previously stated we chose our font for the band name and the album name to be the same. However in order to differentiate them from eachother, we decided to add effects, shapes and change the sizing for it to stand out to become their trade mark style for the band name.

1st Draft

2nd Draft

3rd Draft

4th Draft

FINAL

We chose to emphasise the 'P' by making it larger and longer in order to create levels to the name, we felt that this would make it stand out and attractive to the audience, this added a different dimension to it. Because the first letter was larger than the rest, we decided to put the last letter smaller than the rest aswell. Because we had a red and black colour scheme throughout our promotional package we wanted to incorporate it into our final band name logo, we thought that red would represent the romantic genre and stand out to an audience as black and red are contrasting. The use of these red long lines, creates a modern edgy effect to it and also creates layering as it is placed behind the 'P' so that attention isn't taken off the band name. We also didnt chose to extend the red lines the whole way as we wanted to break normal conventions and when asking members of the class they said it looked too formal, we also showed them it with only one red line and they felt that it looked odd and pointless.

'All That We Needed' chosing font/chosen font

As a group we needed to decide what font 'All That We Needed' the band name would be in. However when we were experimenting with fonts we originally were having the album name as 'Hey There Delilah' which is why these fonts are based on that song title. The typeface for this album name would be the same as for the 'Plain White T's' to create consistency and a professional look to our promotional packagae. However there will be different elements and effects done on the bands name to the album name to differentiate them. Below are the fonts we researched and tried out:

We then as agroup narrowed it down to two different fonts that we thought stood out best and reflected the genre the most. These fonts were 'Poor Richard' and 'Pristina.' We liked the formalness of the poor richard font as it isnt over the top, it is cleard to read and in a non edgey serious font. We also liked the 'Pristina' font as it is in italics which could reflect hand writing which reflects the romantic genre of love letters. However when it is put in capitals it doesnt look as effective or romantic. We decided to see how the font would look in a smaller font, incase we wished to use it for the song lyrics text, it was clear that Poor Richard was easier to read and looked much neater and effective.

Therefore our chosen typeface for 'All That We Needed' and 'Plain White T's' is Poor Richard.

Style Guide

Below is our style guide explaining the fonts, colour, scheme, photography, fashion, location and props that will be used within our project.Creating this style guide was important as it creates consistency and ensures our project follows a certain style which reflects the band further.

Letter Of Approval To Film In The Train Station

A particular setting we would like to film in is a train station. Our chosen train station was London Bridge as it is very big and has various platforms to chose from. In order to film in the train station I have wrote a letter to the National Rail to gain permission for security and safety reasons. Below is the letter I sent to the National Rail Inquiries Customer Relations.

Letter for copyright permission

'Hey There Delilah' by 'Plain White T's' is owned by Fearless records and Hollywood records. As a group we felt that we should ask for permission to use this song to create a music video for copyright legal reasons. Below is the letter I sent to the UK record company 'Fearless Records.'

Our Pitch

Below is our Pitch which was recorded by another member of the class. The video includes, the choice  of setting, motifs chosen, band shots, letters of permission, storyboards etc.

Below is the Prezi which is displayed within the video:

Planning Our Pitch

As a group we have to pitch to our class our plan for 'Hey There Delilah' music video in order to gain approval to go ahead and start filming. We will need to discuss the following in our pitches:

  1. Identification of the target audience
  2. Storyboard drafts(beginning, middle and end.)
  3. Location ideas with images
  4. Mood boards
  5. Ancillary tasks chosen for each candidate
  6. Production schedule
  7. Allocation of roles/casting
  8. Preliminary research into the genre and type of project chosen.

As a team we created a mood board which includes text and images focused around the song 'Hey There Delilah.' The mood board reflects the genre, ideas doe setting, ideas for camera shots, the meaning, props, themes, instruments etc to give us inspiration for our final music video, Below is the mood board we created and will share with out class when pitching.

Hey There Delilah Lyric Video

Analysis of the 'Hey There Delilah' music video

Analysis of 'Hey There Delilah' by 'Plain White T's'

  1. 3 way split screens
  2. camera moves with movement of the narrative
  3. The singing is only a solo shot of the main band leader in a vast room.
  4. The lighting within the narrative is icy and cold, with the use of blue as it is at night, the singing however is in black and white to show emotion. Two different colours are used to differentiated them from one another.
  5. The narrative is set in the location of new york, showing her journey without Tom the lead singer. Iconic settings and objects are shown like times square, yellow taxis and the subway.
  6. Split screen on band shots show his face, instrument, and zoom up of hand on playing the guitar.
  7. Other band members are introduced but not singing or playing an isntruments, a pan view from left to right of them.
  8. The split screen sometimes splits the whole image into three istead of showing three different pieces of action.
  9. There are many moments within the solo band shots and the narrative where they look into the camera to show emotion.
  10. Over the shoulder shot of her walking, camera moves with the action as she goes up and down so does the camera. Hand held camera used so you can go on her journey with her, it looks like a documentary of her life.
  11. Zoom up of girls lips before showing face, teasing the audience. Also an element of  gaze theory as she is putting make up on.
  12. Many shots of the lights in timesquare collaging together as one blur. This also happens in the shot of the train going past, leaving the light on the train station ceiling to blur out.
  13. There is a still shot of the guitar to represent the genre and show how it is lonely just like Tom is.
  14. There is a split screen moment where Tom plays the guiar, and the bottom half of the split screen is the shadow.
  15. The lead singer is wearing a plain tee, converse and jeans creating a casual look represting the bands name. The more simplistic the outfits are the more the audience will focus on the action.
  16. The last shot is off the chair left in the middle of the room that he was playing on, reflecting the idea of being all alone.
